Historic Event Today: NASA partners with SpaceX for Astronaut Launch

Today is the day! At 4:33PM today NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley, will launch the SpaceX Falcon 9 and Crew Dragon and head towards the International Space Station. This launch is especially significant because it will be the first commercially operated crewed rocket launch ever and be the first human launch from American soil in almost 10 years! The crew will launch from pad 39-A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida- the same pad that Apollo 11 astronauts launched from in 1969 for humans first landing on the Moon.

Happy International Museum Day!

Every year since 1977, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) has organized International Museum Day on behalf of the global museum community. On this day, participating institutions all over the world highlight the important role that museums play—in our communities and in society as a whole—as vital sites of engagement, education, cultural stewardship, and civic development. According to ICOM, participation in International Museum Day is growing all over the world. In 2019, more than 55.000 museums participated, in some 150 countries!

These extraordinary young people were chosen from a host of applicants by a panel composed of Discovery Center staff, Alex Higgins’ family members, and community volunteers. Registration is now open for our 2020 Virtual Summer Camps!

As the Discovery Center building remains temporarily closed in response to social distancing measures, we are as committed as ever to being an educational resource for children and families in and beyond New Hampshire. This year, we have opted to host our 2020 STEM Summer Camps in a virtual format! All of our camps can be completed at home by the camper, and include lessons with museum educators, hands-on projects, and opportunities for peer-to-peer social interaction. Follow-Up to #Hubble30: Additional Resources

Thanks to everyone who joined us for our very first Facebook Live event, in celebration of the Hubble Space Telescope’s 30th birthday! Faithe and Sarah had a blast presenting on live video feed about the history and significance of the Hubble Space Telescope. (Hubble launched from the Kennedy Space Center on the shuttle Discovery on April 24, 1990.)

In this post, we share additional Hubble resources, to keep the learning coming all weekend. In particular, there are plenty of opportunities to dive deeper into the Cosmic Reef—which we are able to visit via the special Hubble image “Tapestry of Blazing Starbirth” that was publicly revealed for the first time on April 24, 2020.

Since 1970, communities and activists have celebrated Earth Day on April 22. On this day, people all over the world show their support for environmental protection, advocating and working to make our planet a cleaner and healthier place for all of us. This year, for the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, the theme is climate change.

The Earth Day Network offers many opportunities the join and follow the global movement for environmentalism. For something closer to home, the Discovery Center will be posting crafts, resources, activities throughout the day, with the aim of learning about—and appreciating the beauty in—our very own home planet.
