At-home STEM Activities: Unexpected Science Careers: Science Illustrator
Science and art are often seen as opposites—objective versus subjective. Yet, in textbooks and museums, you find a blend of the two in science illustrations.
ICYMI: A Needle in a Haystack: Storm Chasing in the Southern Great Plains
A presentation by Dr. Eric Hoffman of Plymouth State University taught us about tornados, the storms that form them, and faculty/student storm chasing trips.
ICYMI: Super Stellar Friday and Purple Sea Urchins
Aidan Furze, research assistant at Brown University taught us about purple sea urchins and the biology behind developing sea urchin embryos.
Update: April 9th Spemki Nib8iwi postponed
Due to the weather forecast, we are postponing our collaborative event at the Mt. Kearsarge Indian Museum that was originally going to be Saturday, April 9th.
ICYMI: Super Stellar Friday and the Spring Sky!
We had a great time learning about the spring sky with our own Dave McDonald on Friday! If you missed it or want to remind yourself of some of the special things to looks for (Planets! Planets! Planets!), you can access the recording here.
Spemki Nib8iwi: The Heavens in the Nighttime!
Get ready for our first in-person star-gazing event of the year! If you are ready to get outside for some stars and stories, mark your calendars for Saturday, April 9th at 7 pm.
ICYMI: Super Stellar Friday and Dinosaurs!
If you missed hearing our own Brendan Clement give us a tour of the geology and dinosaurs of Thermopolis, Wyoming, you can check out the recording here.
Coming Soon: Virtual Super Stellar Friday and the Spring Sky
Join Educator Dave McDonald as he takes you on a journey into the night sky. Learn about the stars and constellations of spring. How do you measure the brightness of stars? What do the colors of the stars mean? What zodiacal constellations are visible and how do I find them? Where can I find some planets to observe without a telescope? It's all this and more included in April’s Super Stellar Friday.
You can register for this free online event here!
Coming Soon: Virtual Super Stellar Friday and Wyoming Dinosaurs!
Curious about places where there ARE dinosaur fossils? Join us for the next virtual Super Stellar Friday on March 4th at 7 pm as educator Brendan Clement takes us on a tour of his summer internship at the Wyoming Dinosaur Center! He’ll introduce us to the geology of Thermopolis, Wyoming and some of the dinosaurs that once lived there. He’ll also provide a glimpse of what it’s like to visit. This online event is free and open to the public, but you must register here.
ICYMI: Super Stellar Friday and Team Cooke NoMADS!
We had a great presentation on Friday from Sydney and Ray of UNH-Manchester’s Team Cooke as we learned about their NASA project to send soil to space! In case you missed it, the recording can be found here.
Coming Soon: Virtual Super Stellar Friday and UNH's Team Cooke
Team Cooke NoMADS is a college student team from the University of New Hampshire at Manchester sending an experiment to the International Space Station. Their experiment examines the changes that soil bacteria will undergo in the space conditions of the ISS. Join us for virtual Super Stellar Friday on Friday, February 4th at 7 pm as they explain the science behind their experiment, including bacteria, antibiotic resistance, and the way that their experiment will work, their experience working with NASA on this project, and the ways that they have involved youth in the community in their science! This event is free and open to the public, but you need to register to attend- you can register here.
ICYMI: Super Stellar Friday and Extra-Earth Climates!
On Friday Mirka Zapletal, our director of education, gave us a better sense of what conditions will be like for astronauts that spend time on the Moon or Mars, including temperatures, seasons (or lack thereof), and long-term cycles. In case you missed it, you can watch the recording here.
Snow Track Science!
Think it’s too cold to do science outside? THINK AGAIN! In this blog post we will teach you “Snow Track Science”, where we will use the snow to solve science mysteries like "what critters are hanging out in my yard when I’m not there?”. Grab a notebook, a pencil, and a coat because we are on the hunt…for knowledge.
2022 Alex Higgins Memorial Space Camp Scholarship
Do you know a New Hampshire student ages 9-18 who loves space? The 2022 Alex Higgins Memorial Space Camp Scholarship will send three more applicants to Space Camp in Huntsville, AL! This scholarship includes tuition, room, & board- travel expenses to Huntsville are not included.
ICYMI: Super Stellar Friday and Computer Programming
Senior Educator Dave McDonald took us through the Scratch program developed at MIT in an introduction to computer programming! If you missed the presentation or want to go back through some of the steps, you can find the recording here.
Coming Soon: Virtual Super Stellar Friday and Extra-Earth Climates
NASA has big plans for getting astronauts back to the Moon and then on to Mars, plus ideas about exploring asteroids and other moons. Getting there is one big challenge- being there is another. What kinds of conditions will astronauts have to contend with as they journey away from Earth? Join the Discovery Center's Mirka Zapletal on Friday, January 7th at 7 pm as we explore the climates of the Moon and Mars. This event is free to the public but registration is required- you can register here.
ICYMI: Extreme Heat in New Hampshire
We took a look at our temperature data from the summer on Wednesday and then had a great conversation about other trends in New Hampshire and how we can use this information to plan for the future- a HUGE thank you to all of our volunteers, the NH League of Conservation Voters, and the Mount Washington Observatory for all of their help! You can check out the recording here.
ICYMI: Super Stellar Friday and Atoms
We had a wonderful presentation from Dr. Shawna Hollen of University of New Hampshire looking at her team’s work getting pictures at the atomic level! In case you missed it, the recording is here.
Coming Soon: Virtual Super Stellar Friday and Computer Programming
In this day and age, the question is not whether or not you use computers, but rather whether you tell computers what to do, or computers tell you what to do. Dave McDonald will instruct you in an easy to learn, but powerful programming language called Scratch. Developed by M.I.T. it is very visual and logically oriented. Learn to make colorful and interactive avatars that you can program to entertain you or your friends with games or just dance around. If you prefer, you can solve a quadratic equation or determine the probability of an event happening. Dave will show you resources so you can learn even more on your own time and learn to program rather than always being programmed. This program is suitable for 4th graders and up. Join the fun Friday, December 3rd at 7 pm- register here.
