MSDC Summer 2019 STEM Interns

The McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center seeks candidates with STEM backgrounds to work with educators, day campers, and the public at the Discovery Center this summer. The STEM Interns will work with the Discovery Center’s Education Team to develop age-appropriate, STEM-based curricula and daily activities for the Center’s summer STEM day camp series for ages 5-14, and serve as lead summer camp teachers and counselors, creating an enjoyable, safe, challenging educational STEM camp for all Discovery Center campers. Camp topics include astronomy, programming, and engineering. The STEM Interns also assist with other Discovery Center educational initiatives. 

Applicants must be currently enrolled as undergraduate or graduate students majoring in a STEM field; at least three months’ experience in teaching and/or working with children is preferred. The ideal candidates will be self-starters with strong leadership and social skills, who enjoy working with children and who can positively challenge and encourage children to learn and explore. Due to federal funding for this program, applicants must be U.S. citizens.

Salary:  $12/hour, 32-40 hours/week from June 3 through August 16 for a total of 400 hours; schedule is primarily Monday through Friday but may include weekends and some nights.

Visitor Services Assistant

We are hiring part-time visitor services assistants who will make a great first impression on our visitors and program participants, through friendly and efficient front desk and telephone reception, accurate reservations and admission, membership, Science store and program sales. This position also serves as front line security.

 Minimum requirements: High school degree or GED equivalent and six months’ experience in cashiering and accounting for daily receipts. Familiarity with computers and software systems a plus. Come join a team dedicated to creating a great science museum experience every day!

 This position is part-time, and ranges from 6 – 30 hours/week. Weekday, night and weekend shifts available; more hours will be available to candidates who can work a flexible schedule that includes weekdays, weekends and nights. Starting pay is $10/hour.


Volunteers are crucial to the success of the Discovery Center! Through the efforts of our extraordinary volunteers, the Discovery Center is able to provide quality programs and events that benefit our many visitors.

How Can You Help?

The volunteers of the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center give their time and talents to support the following activities:

Education Team School Group Educator: If you are interested in air and space and also like working with children, then this is the position for you! Run demonstration and discovery experiences to the many school groups who visit the center each day.
Exhibit Docent: On days when we are open to the public you can interact with visitors by leading demonstrations and explaining exhibits.

Daytime Cleaning:
Our exhibits are used daily and regular cleaning is imperative to keeping them looking and operating at their best!
Landscaping and Gardening:
The Discovery Center has garden beds that always need attention. If you are interested in gardening and would like to help the Discovery Center look its best, then this is the perfect volunteer opportunity for you!

Perks to Being a Volunteer Volunteer who work more than 40 hours quarterly will be given an Individual membership to the Discovery Center! Volunteers who work more than 60 hours quarterly will be given a 2-Person Membership to the Discovery Center!
