We’re excited to announce our topic and speaker for September’s Virtual Super Stellar Friday! On September 4 at 7:00 PM, as part of our continuing Celebration of Women in STEM, Dr. Samantha Hauser will be talking about her work with the endangered Hawaiian monk seal. Join us to learn how DNA analysis and conservation genetics help researchers protect a species and plan for its long-term success. You'll hear about lab methods, how conservation genetics help support endangered species, and Sam's STEM journey.
Samantha Hauser, PhD is a postdoctoral fellow at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee where she uses DNA to study and help conserve endangered species. At UWM, she currently works on two main projects: 1) conservation genetics of the Hawaiian monk seal and 2) integration of genetics into their AZA zoos' national breeding programs. She founded and co-moderates a science communication campaign called '46 Questions for Scientists' that humanizes scientists and breaks typical and harmful scientist stereotypes through 46 rapid-fire question interviews (46questions.wordpress.com or '46 Questions' on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook). Sam received her PhD from University of Louisiana, Lafayette studying the movement patterns of the then-endangered bird, the Black-Capped Vireo, and her BS from Rutgers University. You can learn more about her work through her website (https://samanthashauser.weebly.com) or follow her on twitter where she hosts a weekly bird quiz (@SamanthaSHauser).
