Coming Soon: Virtual Super Stellar Friday--Geometry is knowledge of the eternally existent
Our physical space is still closed to visitors, but we can bring the universe to you…Join us Friday, July 3 at 7:00 PM as we explore Pythagoras’ contributions to geometry in the next Virtual Super Stellar Friday!
Join the Discovery Center’s Membership and Volunteer Coordinator, Katie Marinoff, for a Super Stellar Friday live presentation via Zoom webinar!
Description of the Event
Geometry is knowledge of the eternally existent: Pythagoras, his namesake theorem, and its various proofs
In ancient Greece, a cult-like group followed their leader in study, prayer, and devotion to numbers, believing they had mystical and spiritual qualities. While this sounds like it could be the basis for the next Indiana Jones movie, it’s actually the source of everyone’s favorite high school geometry concept!
In this presentation, learn about the mathematician Pythagoras and his Brotherhood of Pythagoreans, the theorem named for him, and the different ways it’s been shown to be true.
We hope to see you there!
In this segment of Raphael's fresco The School of Athens, Pythagoras is presented with a tablet of mystic numerological symbolism…what does this MATHEMATICIAN of yore have to tell us about geometry tooday? (image credit: wikimedia commons)

About the Presenter:
Before Katie Marinoff joined the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center team as the Membership and Volunteer Coordinator, she was studying math! She received her B.S. in math from Keene State College and her M.S. in math from the University of New Hampshire. When she's not at the Discovery Center or thinking about triangles, Katie enjoys solving a good crossword puzzle, hanging out with her cat, and tending to her plant babies.
