At Home for Earth Day: Rain Cloud Mobile
Upcycle leftover packaging to create this cute all-ages cloud mobile!
Materials
Cardboard food box—e.g. from cereal, pizza, or crackers
Cardboard or Styrofoam egg carton
White paper
Blue paint
Cotton balls
Glue (we used both glue sticks and white Elmer’s school glue)
Scissors
Sharp pencil, safety pin, or other object with a sharp point (for poking holes)
String, twine, or fishing line
Procedure
Cut a square or rectangle out of your leftover food box, and glue a piece of white paper to each side (we used a glue stick for this)—leaving you with a two-sided white piece of board
Cut out the board in the shape of a cloud (it may help to draw an outline on one side before cutting)
Glue cotton balls to both sides of your “cloud” (we used liquid Elmer’s glue for this part)
Cut several cups out of your leftover egg carton (ask an adult for help, if needed!)
Paint each cup blue (inside and out) and let dry
When your “raindrops” are dry, use a sharpened pencil or a safety pin to poke a hole in the closed end of each one
Use twine or string to tie together multiple raindrops in small groups—space the drops out along the length of string, and knot the string on the bottom of each cup to hold it in place
Poke holes along the bottom of your cloud, thread the raindrop strings through the holes, and tie the strings in place—so that the raindrops are hanging from the bottom of your cloud
Poke a hole in the top of the cloud, and thread through a hanging string (we used yarn)
