Virtual Exhibit: Shackleton Research Station

The Discovery Center is working hard to virtualize and share our exhibits with teachers and families while they are home remote teaching. Download a copy of our virtual exhibit: Shackleton Research Station and discover what it would be like if you lived on a lunar colony! When you are done, download the accompanying worksheet and test your knowledge! Then try to make your very own lunar colony.

Test your knowledge! See what you have learned about space and living in a lunar colony.

Make Your Own Lunar Colony Activity

1. Gather some arts and crafts supplies and make your very own lunar colony.

2. Create a list of what you will need to have at your lunar colony to survive. Think about what the virtual exhibit highlighted for necessities on Shackleton Research Station.

3. Map out your lunar colony. Don’t forget to be as creative as you want to be! I began drawing an outline of what I wanted my colony to look like and got creative from there. Use colors to color code, create a key, or to just for design.

4. As I continued the map of my colony, I added sections that were not on my original list, including a research outpost, a vent to recycle water in the air, and a room for space suits and gear. What did you add to your colony that was not on your original list?
