ham radio in space

The Planetarium has recently acquired a Ham Radio station thanks to a generous equipment donation by the New England Amateur Radio Festival (NEAR-Fest). Six Planetarium staff members were able to get their ham radio licenses thanks to the efforts of the Contoocook Valley Radio Club. With this station, we will be able to communicate with the Space Station and shuttle and with other stations across the globe. This station was dedicated in memory of Greg Mumley (KA1FJ, SK).

ham radio at the Planetarium

Spacetacular Saturday 2008 was a great day! The Mumley family joined us for a touching Ham Radio Station dedication and enjoyed getting to be among the very first to use the new station. Pictured here, one of the Mumley children talks to a ham operator in Hillsboro, NH with a Planetarium control operator, K1KTE.

The station is still growing! We currently have a 2-meter band antenna for it on our roof and will be getting access to more ham bands soon.
